Three Filmmakers, One Grudge Against the Industry

Unorthodogs was founded by Ömer Faruk Bakirci, Buğra Özbay, and Arif Can Çine, three filmmakers who built the agency out of what they describe as years of grinding through every corner of the production business. Their own account of the founding is blunt about its origins: boredom and rebellion, not ambition in the conventional sense. "We didn't stumble into filmmaking. We lived it," is how they put it, and that first-person framing runs through the way the studio presents itself — less a pitch deck than a statement of accumulated frustration turned into a working method.

That background matters because it shapes what Unorthodogs is built to do. This is not a shop assembled around account management and strategy decks. It is a production-first operation run by people who came up on set, and the name itself signals a deliberate distance from agency convention — a studio positioning itself against the standard playbook rather than inside it.

Independence, Verified

Free Agency Media's classification for Unorthodogs is confirmed independent. The verification work turned up all three co-founders by name, each with personal email addresses and social media presence tied directly to them, which is the kind of granular ownership signal that separates a genuinely founder-run shop from a shell entity or a network subsidiary dressed up in independent language. The origin narrative reinforces the finding rather than just decorating it: the founders speak in first person about their own history and their own decision to start the company, not in the borrowed corporate language that often surrounds agencies with murkier ownership structures. Between the named founders, their direct contact presence, and the consistency of the founding story across sources, Unorthodogs reads as a clean case — independent by structure and by the way its own people talk about it.

The Work on Record

The clearest documented piece of Unorthodogs' output is its contribution to a Misli x Galatasaray SK campaign, where the studio supplied production crew — an assistant director and a B camera operator — to a shoot produced by Yapar İstanbul and created by We Istanbul. It is a crew credit rather than a lead-agency credit, and that distinction is worth stating plainly: Unorthodogs showed up here as the production muscle inside someone else's creative and production hierarchy, not as the agency of record.

For a studio only a short distance removed from its founding story, that kind of credit is a reasonable data point rather than a verdict. It confirms Unorthodogs has real production capability that other companies are willing to call in on a campaign involving a club with the visibility of Galatasaray SK. What it does not yet show, at least on the record available, is the studio leading its own branded campaign from concept through delivery. The founders' pitch is that they lived the industry before naming a company after their impatience with it — the Misli work is an early, concrete instance of that experience being put to use on someone else's set.
